Planning Your Pour: The Concrete Volume Calculator

Whether you're laying a foundation for a new shed, pouring a patio, or setting fence posts, accurately calculating the amount of concrete you need is the critical first step. Ordering too little concrete can halt your project midway, leading to weak points and ugly seams. Ordering too much is a waste of money and creates a disposal problem. This concrete calculator helps you avoid these issues by providing a reliable estimate of the volume of concrete required for your project.

Concrete is typically ordered and measured in cubic yards or cubic meters. This calculator takes the three dimensions of your pour—length, width, and thickness—and computes the total volume required. It's an essential tool for DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors alike, ensuring you can plan your project with confidence and budget accurately.

How Concrete Volume is Calculated

The calculation is a straightforward volume computation.

  • First, the volume is calculated in cubic feet by multiplying the length (in feet), width (in feet), and thickness (converted from inches to feet by dividing by 12).
  • Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness (in) / 12)
  • Since concrete is ordered in cubic yards, this value is then converted. There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard.
  • Volume (cubic yards) = Volume (cubic feet) / 27

It's always a good practice to add about 5-10% to your final order to account for uneven subgrade, spillage, and waste.
